About the Artist
***********
TANYA STEPHENS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhcgfKd65Lg
The quintessential Jamaican singer / songwriter, Tanya Stephens
is equally adept at blazing the latest dancehall riddims as she is at
blessing an acoustic guitar-driven ballad with lyrics that are
insightful, relevant, comical, and often scathing......life and love
observed with the honest eyes of a child, yet processed and returned to
her audience with uncommon maturity and melody. On Rebelution, Tanya
Stephens once again displays her wit and musical sensibilities
Tanya
has scored international hits in the past with the classics "Goggle"
and "You Nuh Ready Yet,"....songs still guaranteed to move the crowd in
any setting. Her last album Gangsta Blues yielded the one-drop anthem
"It's A Pity," on the Doctors Darling riddim. The song was clearly one
of the biggest tunes of 2004, and arguably Tanya's career, and
introduced the rest of the world to Tanya Stephens, the single found its
way onto commercial radio and eventually video outlets like MTV Jams.
The success of that single, followed by the critical acclaim from
numerous media outlets (including the NY Times, Village Voice, Source,
and Vibe Magazine) helped propel Tanya to the forefront of Jamaican
music, and is the reason that nearly 2 years after it's release, Gangsta
Blues remains on the Billboard Reggae chart.
The obvious
difference between Tanya and any other artiste coming out of Jamaica is
her extremely varied fan base. Stephens' following represents age 8 to
80 and encompasses people from beyond every boundary. When asked what
she considers to be her most valuable assets, Tanya replied "Honesty and
consistency. I believe if people want to gamble they will go to a
casino. There shouldn't be any risk involved in walking into a record
shop and using your hard earned cash to buy an album. That's why I had
to make sure I kept honing my craft until I could confidently invite you
to pick up any Tanya Stephens album entirely off of trust, secure in
the knowledge I will never violate it!"
On the 1st single "These
Streets," an airy acoustic guitar track, Tanya pleads with her thug-love
to realize that "these streets don't love you like I do." On this, her
6th LP, Tanya is poised to reach even greater international acclaim and
finally be recognized by the masses as one of the greatest talents to
emerge from Jamaica. Rebelution features the musings of a songbird who
is vulnerable enough to feel the pain, but tough enough to live through
it.
With a militant swagger, Rebelution is an edgy narrative of a
street smart guerilla poet who continues to break the stereotype of
what a female Jamaican artist should sound like. Smart and sexy, jagged
and cunning, the lyrics flow out of the speakers and attack the
unfortunate victims of her sharp tongue. This is not a passive
listener's record, nor is it a record for the weak hearted. It screams
and bites in the gentlest way possible, with back handed compliments and
sometimes less-than-reaffirming opinions. Armed with a fervent voice
and classy demeanor Tanya tells her truth the way she sees it,
uncompromising and uncensored. The evolution from the love scorned
Gangsta Blues is apparent, but does not stray from the autobiographical,
if anything Rebelution is the next chapter in her story. Already a cult
hero in the Reggae industry, this album has Tanya Stephens crying from
the hills and streets of Kingston... "Viva La Rebelution!"

LOS RAKAS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyujRXZ2Gms
There
are groups that come along and totally change the way we listen,
appreciate and connect to music. Los Rakas is another one of these
groups. Hailing from Panama but now residing in Oakland, Los Rakas
blends Hip Hop, Reggae and Dancehall music with Spanish and English
lyricism creating songs that leaves your head noddin’ and body rockin’
for more. Los Rakas (DunDun and Rico AKA Filthy Rich) tag team the mic
with a tenacity reminiscent of Old School veterans in the Hip Hop game,
and the energy and passion of the newer cats on the scene. With a fusion
of Spanish and English lyrics, Los Rakas are like no other, being
compared to a Latin “OutKast”. This combination ensures that they will
be on horizon for years to come. Although Los Rakas are relatively new
on the music scene (4 years recording/performing) Los Rakas are
fortunate to have performed alongside artist such as: Mos Def, DJ FLEX
(from Panama), Dead Prez, KRS ONE, Goapele, Mystic, Zion I, Fat Joe,
Colby O'donis, Extreme, Def Poetry Jam NY, among others. With this
unique sound they were invited to Mun2 (National Television), One Nation
under Hip Hop w/ Dj Frankie Needles, including a recent nomination for a
Mun2 awards. Los Rakas were also fortunate to be part of MTVtrs3, "A
day with a star”. Los Rakas plan to gain radio play and continue having
there video "Mi Barrio" aired on T.V. (currently on Mun2, LATV, and
MTVtres, Youtube). For the remaining of '09 Los Rakas are preparing the
release of the street album/mixtape PANABAY TWIST 2 “La Tanda Del Bus”,
and continue marketing the Raka t-shirts. Currently Los Rakas are
booking shows and events and have had successful years creating a buzz
displaying just what the people who have seen them perform already know,
that Los Rakas are the truth. Panabay Twist 2 "La Tanda Del Bus" is
sure to be one of the most talked about and sought after mixtapes to
come out in sometime. www.losrakas.com
Funky C - Joya
When you ask “Funky C” about his musical
influences, the Chilean-born composer will start telling you an eclectic
list of musicians that expand from the baroque to the grandmasters of
funk, soul, rock, Latin jazz, bossa-nova and Latin alternative rock. On
any given day, his house was filled with music starting with his very
own father’s, Hugo Moraga Lacoste, one of the most prolific
singer/songwriters in Chile to the recordings and LPs from Jobim, Frank
Zappa, Hector Lavoe, James Brown, Prince, Chick Corea, Miles Davis,
Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Stevie Wonder to Argentina’s Luis Alberto Spinetta
and Charly García as well as Satie, Debussy, Ravel, Bach amongst many
others.
Born at the twilight of the 70s during the Pinochet
dictatorship era, Cristian Sol Moraga Farías-known as Funky C- began his
musical career at an early age when, at 14, he accompanied his father
on stage performing on keyboards. As his passion for the arts grew, he
became a regular in the Santiago music scene rubbing elbows with some of
the most prolific artists in his native country. At 16 and changing a
keyboard to the electric guitar, Funky C met David “Rulo” Eidelstein who
shared his love for music, months later they established a band by the
name of Los Tetas, and thus changing the way funk was portrayed in their
country and the rest of Latin America. It was a breath of fresh air for
Chileans by offering an alternative to the aggressive punk scene of the
time which exploded as a direct response to Pinochet’s oppressive
regime. Signed to Universal, Los Tetas shared the stage and toured with
bands such as Cypress Hill, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Molotov, Marilyn
Manson, Plastilina Mosh, Illya Kuryaki and the Valderramas, Control
Machete, Dante Spinetta and many others. The band quickly became a Latin
Funk/Dance hit, reaching the top of the charts in their homeland and as
far north as Mexico with Gold and Platinum record sales along the way.
In
2004, and after a decade performing in front of hundreds of thousands
Los Tetas called it quits, Moraga pledged not to set a foot on stage
again. But, the music was stronger than ever and the idea to take his
funk to a new level kept his mind busy with new songs to show the world.
Following steady collaborations as a producer and guest performer
including a recording with his own father, Funky C assembled a band of
very close friends; Felipe Foncea on keyboards, Roberto “Chicho”
Espinoza (bass), Francisco “ Pepino” Gonzalez (Los Tetas) on drums, and
Michele Espinoza on vocals to record “Joya”, his solo debut. Hungry for
new genre bending music Sonic360 signed Funky C worldwide ex. Chile. The
album features a sound described by Funky C as “Funk Latino, Old and
New, Classic and Modern… with the sound of today mixed with music from
the old school days… real live sound mixed with computers.”
Recorded
in San Francisco, California, “Joya” includes songs laced with funk,
hip-hop and dance and is perfumed with a distinctive Latin soul; the
album features a parade of treasured jewels in the form of guest
musicians who pay a visit throughout the production, including: Dante
Spinetta, who shared his love for funk and alongside Funky C was one of
the pioneers of the 90s Latin funk revival in South America; Juan Sativo
from Tiro de Gracia; Sonido Ácido; Maximiliano Alarcón; Anzuelo; and
Julio Briceño from Venezuela’s gosadera superstars Los Amigos
Invisibles. The album also includes the song “City Funktasma,” a track
written by his very own father- Hugo Moraga-, who also performed
alongside Funky C.
Described as “monstrous funk” by Rickey
Vincent (History of Funk), “Joya” was released in Chile in 2006, where
it was quickly embraced by fans and media alike and was voted the No.2
album by Chilean journalists and the general public in the “Best Albums
of the Year” list. His concerts have been collecting rave reviews from
some of the most important newspapers in Chile, “keeping the funk” alive
and well in a country that has seen a rebirth of freedom and has
started to put behind an era that saw many musician’s dream crushed by a
ruthless dictator.
“Joya” US release is in stores May 15th 2007
on Sonic360 the label that brought the world Kinky. It will be followed
by a promotional appearance in Los Angeles and other key cities.

DJ ROMEO (WILD 94.9)
http://www.mixcrate.com/search/results/q:dj%20romeo
DJ Romeo Reyes is one of the most sought-after DJs in Northern California and is rapidly gaining national acclaim for his ability to play an open format of music. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, DJ Romeo first discovered his love for the turntables when he was sixteen years old. Since then, DJ Romeo has worked tirelessly to master his craft and has acquired an expertise in the art of deejaying that can only be achieved by a DJ with true passion for and commitment to his trade.
At DJ Romeo’s very first event, his performance fell short of the crowds, and his own, expectations. Rather than becoming discouraged, DJ Romeo viewed the event as a learning experience and devoted his time and energy to refining his style. Today, highly respected by his peers for his versatility and ingenuity, DJ Romeo is guaranteed to rock any party with his exceptional programming and impressive technical skills.
What distinguishes DJ Romeo from other DJs is his presence and capacity to energize any audience, regardless of the venue or demographics. These attributes have elevated DJ Romeo’s status from talented DJ to accomplished entertainer whose gigs are highly anticipated by supporters and widely publicized by promoters and nightclub owners alike. In addition to playing at nightclubs and other events, DJ Romeo hosted a weekly lifestyle television show called “Built From Skratch,” which is broadcasted nationally on the MYX channel. DJ Romeo has also appeared on MTV’s “I’m From Rolling Stone,” and on WB Channel 20’s “Distortion 2 Static.”
Aside from television, DJ Romeo was a DJ and an on-air jock on San Francisco’s WILD 94.9 and SIRIUS Satellite Radio. His dynamic mixes can still be heard on 102.5 KDON in Salinas, California every Saturday night.
In 2005, DJ Romeo was among one of the first 20 DJs selected to become an “Official MySpace DJ,” along with heavy-hitters DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Q-Bert, and DJ AM. Shortly thereafter, DJ Romeo joined rap artist 50 Cent and DJ Whookid in forming a DJ crew called the “ShadyVille DJs,” which is an elite crew comprised of the nation’s top 25 DJs.
DJ Romeo has played at nightclubs in major metropolitan cities across the United States, including Las Vegas, Nevada; Hollywood, California; Honolulu, Hawaii; San Diego, California and Charlotte, North Carolina. DJ Romeo is also frequently invited to play and tour at events all over the world, including Vancouver, BC Canada; Puerto Rico; the Bahamas; Dominican Republic; Taipei, Taiwan and the Philippines.
DJ APOLLO (TRIPLE THREAT)
http://www.mixcrate.com/search/results/q:dj%20apollo
DJ Apollo is a hip hop legend and musical pioneer who helped lay the
foundation for the subculture known as turntablism. Born in the
Philippines and raised in San Francisco, Apollo is a jack of all trades
known for his many musical styles, from hip hop to R&B, soul, funk,
breaks, 80's, disco, and rap. He was one of the first DJs to experiment
with the turntable as a musical instrument, which helped elevate the
skill into an artform and turn the DJ into a musician. Because of this,
Apollo also became one of the first DJs to be member of a live jazz
band.
One of the founders and original members of the Invisbl
Skratch Piklz (ISP), Apollo helped introduce a revolutionary art form to
the music world. The Piklz created the turntable band: an artform in
which turntables become the instruments that form all of the various
sounds. The original Invisibl Skratch Piklz squad comprised of Apollo,
Mix Master Mike and Qbert (also known as the Rock Steady DJs), and each
artist possessed the skills to play various musical roles. These
included the role of the drummer, bass player, and lead scratch or
turntablist. The combined talent of his team earned the group the titles
of Disco Mixing Club (DMC) United States and World Champions (1992),
awards which are the highest honors a DJ group can earn. The original
ISP won them on both the national and international levels.
With
the success in the DJ battle circuit, Apollo's talent caught the
attention of musical geniuses in the jazz and hip hop arenas. Apollo
became the official DJ for Buckshot Lefonque, a band led by jazz legend
Branford Marsalis and co-produced by DJ Premier of Gangstarr. Apollo
also landed the DJ spot for the hip hop collective, Souls of Mischief
and his musical work is featured on the group album No Mans Land.
Another defining moment in Apollo's career has been his experience with
hip hop jazz trumpet player, Russell Gunn. Along with being Russell
Gunn's official DJ, Apollo recorded tracks for Gunn's albums Music
Ethnocology, Volumes 1 and 2. Apollo is one of the few DJs in the world
that has appeared on the three major late night talk shows, including
David Letterman, Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien. He is also featured in
Scratch, a a 2001 documentary film, directed by Doug Pray, that examines
cultural and historical perspectives on the birth and evolution of
hip-hop disc jockeys (DJs), scratching and turntablism and includes
interviews with some of hip-hop's most famous and respected DJs.. Both
national and international publications continue to highlight Apollo
throughout his career, including Vibe, Rolling Stone, URB, DJ Times, and
The Source. His awards include the Technics DMC DJ Hall of Fame Award,
specifically for inventing the art of the turntable band (1999), the
International Turntablist Federation (ITF) Grand Wizard Theodore Award
(2000), and the Hip Hop Slam Hall of Fame Award (2002, presented by
Billy Jam).
In 1999, Apollo joined up with two other legendary
DJs, Shortkut (Beat Junkies) and Vinroc (5th Platoon), to form the super
DJ group Triple Threat. The only collective comprised of all turntable
champions from major turntable crews, Triple Threat strives to master as
many musical styles as possible as they produce tracks, compose music
on the ones and twos, and rock a party with three times the power of
your average turntable legend. Triple Threat has expanded into a music
label and events promotions company as well.
On an individual
level, Apollo also continues to create and master new forms of turntable
trickery. He has an ongoing series of highly-coveted mixes that
incorporate different genres in live gigs and studio beats, and spreads
his musical acumen with DJ gigs throughout the world.
